The Forgotten Art of Establishing Routines

Simply Home

Hot off the blog!

I'd gotten so carried away with expanding my capacity to be and do more that I was starting to feel lost...almost forgotten. So, this week I decided to listen to the nudging of my soul and push the reset button on how I plan my days and spend my time.

I still wrote down my priorities for the week. And I stuck to my general weekly routine…housekeeping on Monday, errands on Tuesday, etc. Other than that, I let each day unfold without rushing to ‘get to work’ or pushing myself to scratch one more to-do off my list.

As a result:

  • My inner taskmaster quieted, knowing she wasn’t in charge. I called it quits on work, chores, and errands around five or six each day, knowing my mind and body were ready to wind down.
  • There was an ease about my week, especially the first part of it as I kept my schedule free of alarm clocks, plans, and appointments because I needed a break from being busy.
  • Actions I took in work or at home were aligned with my purpose, heart’s desires, and instincts. (I finally planted the lantana and purple heart I got last weekend, along with the olive tree I was keeping indoors until the weather cooled off.)
  • I felt safe knowing I could trust myself to honor my needs versus living up to society’s standards of productivity.

It was such a peaceful, fulfilling week!

So, as you leave behind the slower, more relaxed days of Summer for the routine and structure Fall provides, I invite you to take an intentional approach...

The Forgotten Art of Establishing Routines

Routines are less about rigidity and more about rhythm. Rhythm being your natural habits, instincts, and the ebbs and flows of your energy. You can do both; have the structure of a routine and allow for flow.

Hi Reader, It's Sharon from Simply Home, back with a new edition of the Simple Things Digest. Today, I'm sharing what Fall, Coke, and Comfort have in common. On a Personal Note Finding comfort has been my life’s pursuit. When I think I’ve found it, whether it’s in my home, friendships, food, or in a role, I tend to tighten my grip around that thing as if everything depends on it—even when it’s something as small as a fountain Coke. I’ve been a soda drinker since childhood, but through the...

Hi Reader, It's Sharon from Simply Home, back with a new edition of the Simple Things Digest. And man, do I have a story for you... On a Personal Note It was mid afternoon on Friday the thirteenth. (I’m not superstitious. I just mean it was Friday and it was the thirteenth.) Ninety potential jurors, including me, had been at the courthouse since nine a.m. We’d finally finished the questioning phase and were waiting on the lawyers to make their strikes from the jury pool. In the meantime, the...

Hi Reader, It's Sharon from Simply Home, back with a new edition of the Simple Things Digest. Today, I'm sharing what happened behind the scenes once the camera stopped rolling on my home tour video and introducing our September theme. On a Personal Note Right after my niece and I finished filming my home tour, we, along with my daughter and husband, hopped in the car and headed to lunch. On the drive to the restaurant, I pulled out my phone, went to the media library and opened the home tour...
